Bartholomew County: Old Engine 1

Back in the beginning of October, Caleb got “stuck” going to a charity auction for the March of Dimes.  While at the auction, Caleb had the opportunity to bid on, and ultimately won, a ride on a restored 1937 Stutz Diesel Fire Engine.

One of the cool things about the 1937 Stutz is it was one of the first diesel fire trucks in manufactured.  I can’t remember the exact particulars but I do know this fire engine was one of the first engines sold and this particular one was sold to Columbus Fire Department.  I can’t find much information about the Stutz on the internet but if you click here you’ll find more info.

Our ride on the Stutz started off with a private tour of Fire Station 1.  First and most importantly (when you’re almost two) is a chance to “drive” the fire engine. This is followed closely by getting to sit on the front of the fire engine.

Of course, mom and dad thought checking out the living quarters, the cat walk above the fire engines and the fire poles were neat, too.

Finally it was time to head out on the Stutz.  We got a very bumpy, loud, and a little smelly ride thru downtown Columbus and over to Mill Race Park.  At Mill Race Park, we got jump off and snap a few photos with the fire engine.

Then it was back on the engine to finish out our ride thru the park and back to the station.

Unfortunately, our ride wasn’t nearly long enough but it was great fun.  So much fun that Caleb’s been instructed to bid on another ride if he has the opportunity.
