Henry County – Summit Lake State Park
We had decided to do some hiking in western Indiana on Labor Day Weekend. Unfortunately a quick check of the weather, after we already on the road, revealed thunderstorms. We quickly threw together a new plan and we headed off in the direction of Summit Lake State Park.
Almost 30% of Summit Lake State Park is Summit Lake which means lots of opportunities for boating. Due to a combination of cooler weather and Isaac’s broken arm, we stuck to hiking.
We chose Trail 1 and extended our hike a bit by taking the long way back on Trail 5. Both Trail 1 and 5 were flat and well maintained. There were a couple of spots to view the lake and there were tons of wildflowers, berries and butterflies.
I was impressed by the amount of wildflowers and butterflies at Summit Lake. It seemed like one big pollinator park! We enjoyed our hike at the park and would visit more often if it was closer.
After a nice picnic lunch, we made a stop at Wilbur Wright’s Birthplace. Unfortunately it is closed on Sundays but we couldn’t pass up the opportunity for a photo since we were only 5 minutes away.
