Spencer County – Lincoln State Park
In June 2021, we spent a long weekend checking out south western Indiana. On the docket: hiking, friend time, a couple of new counties and then we’d wrap up with a day at Lake Patoka. Our first stop was Lincoln State Park.
We checked out Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Plaza, first.
After some of our friends arrived we headed out on our first hike. From the Plaza there we took trail 5 past the Sarah Lincoln Grigsby (Abraham Lincoln’s older sister) Grave and the Gordon Mill. We were able to interject a little history during our hike and we even learned some interesting facts about the Lincoln family.
After the hike we had a picnic lunch near Lake Lincoln. Then we hiked Trail 1 around the lake with the detour to the fire tower.
We split up from our friends after the hike and we headed across the street to the Lincoln National Boyhood Memorial. We explored the visitor’s center, hiked the Boyhood Trail and visited Lincoln Living Historical Farm. We enjoyed learning more about Abraham Lincoln and life in the early 1800s at the Boyhood Memorial. The kids enjoyed walking around the historical farm, seeing the animals and asking questions to the park service staff members.
