Newton County – Kankakee Sands and Fair Oaks Farms
Our next stop in Northwestern Indiana was Kankakee Sands.
Kankakee Sands is 8,400 acre prairie and wetlands nature preserve. There are hiking trails, a driving tour, and an abundance of plants and wildlife. Our purpose of the stop was to see the bison. Unfortunately, the bison didn’t cooperate with our plan. And since it was rainy we didn’t meander about to get closer to the bison. However, we did take a few minutes to learn a bit of the history of the area.
If you look closely, you can see the bison way off in the distance.
Our final stop for the day was Fair Oaks Farms. We’ve driven by the farm a number of times but never had the opportunity to stop because but today was the day to check it out.
The special event for the weekend was a wild animal nature trail. However, the wild animal meet and great was forced indoors due to the rain. We still enjoyed meeting and learning about these rescued animals.
Then we explored The Dairy Adventure, The Pig Adventure and The Crop Adventure.
Even though we didn’t have enough time for the farm tour, we enjoyed our afternoon at Fair Oaks Farms.
